Good evening,
I purchased this laptop a few years back and for the most part having had that many issues with it.

I do Youtube videos as a side hobby so need to do alot of video rendering, which sometimes causes it to over heat a bit and make really loud noise like its taking flight.

This evening I left it downloading some Youtube videos to while I went downstairs for a few hours (bearing in mind its extremely hot and humid right now in the UK). When I came back upstairs I saw this screen

I have a theory that maybe it has just overheated from being sat on too long in this heat, and me not having sufficient cooling in my setup at home

Since buying the laptop I have upgraded the graphics card to a newer version and also moved from W10 to 11, but other wise its all the same. everything is installed on the SSD drive.

I'm going to leave it turned off for a while and not turn it on for a few hours or until tomorrow morning, but I am really concerned as I have alot of important files saved on the internal hard drives that I can't afford to lose.
Is there any way I can get into the windows BIOS to change the boot order? I'm pretty sure my Windows 11 iinstallation is on the D Drive (SSD) but it just keeps going to this AMD bios screen which has limited options.

Please help !
Kind regards,
Joseph

Hi sorry to double post but just to add some context, I managed to get into the setup menu on this bios and see the HDD information, and it is saying the the 2TB storage SSD is present, but the 1st M.2 SSD Drive 256GB is not present (I think this is the one that has windows on it)

Is it possible that it could be overheated and just need to cool down?
I've never had this issue before outside of mechanical failures with External HDDs

Kind regards,
Joseph

How old is the laptop? Have you ever serviced it?
To avoid overheating issues, it's usually a good idea to repaste every 12 months or so.

The OS should be installed on the M.2 drive, which has most likely failed.
PCS M.2s are usually not very reliable, and I would never recommend them.

I'm not familiar with that BIOS; is it Clevo or TongFang?
My Ionico (TongFang) has AMI BIOS, but have you tried to open the BOOT submenu?

I hope some other members can better assist you. :)

I would agree, the primary drive has likely failed. It would have been quite a heavy bottleneck anyway and a Gen 4 drive would be far better, a Samsung 980 Pro or SolidGM P44 Pro would be a better option.

And I would strongly reiterate, it shouldn't be overheating, it would only do that if it's not been sufficiently serviced which needs to be done once a year. You need to do that immediately before continuing to use it otherwise you risk all out failure.

Just additionally, I wouldn't bother repasting, technology has moved on.

For a laptop especially, there is Thermal Grizzly Kryosheet which is a graphene wafer that is better than most pastes anyway and never degrades. On a laptop this is more important as laptops tend to degrade a lot quicker than a desktop due to the tighter tolerances and higher operating temps.

This you just place it instead of paste and your done for the lifetime of the laptop, never have to worry about it again, obviously need to be sure it's the right size for your CPU.

Obviously you need to effectively clean the CPU of any existing paste before applying the kryosheet with isopropyl alcohol.

It's 2 years old this month actually, and I'll be honest I've never really given it any love on the maintenance front. this is my first time owning a laptop as a long time PC owner. and I've never done anything with thermal pasting before so this is new to me.
From what everyone is saying it sounds like i need to replace that M.2 drive.

Thank you for this, money is a bit tight right now.
Is there any benefit from having an SSD larger than 500GB if I'm only installing windows on it and everything else is installed on the bigger 2TB SSD i have?

I've found a 1TB SAMSUNG 980 PRO on Currys that I can buy now pay later might go for that one.

We would normally recommend 500gb for the OS drive these days, it covers you for the OS and say if you have OneDrive on there too

You've never even opened it to remove dust? You will have a chinchilla inside after two years. :ROFLMAO:
I open mine once every 2 months at most to clean it; even though I don't live in the Sahara, I try to keep it as clear of dust and dirt as possible (especially dog hairs). :)

I would definitely follow @SpyderTracks 's advise to apply Kryosheet and perform regular cleaning intervals.

Hi guys

Update on my progress. I managed to find a Samsung 980 pro 500gb next day delivery. I've taken out the smaller M2 SSD that I think has failed and replaced it with the Samsung one.

I've also used my wife's Mac laptop to make a win11 bootable usb drive, formatted it as exfat and followed a tutorial to get the usb ready.

The new SSD is not being recognized on the boot menu as present, and I'm also not seeing the usb connected either in the menu.

Have I done something wrong or do you reckon there may be an issue with the housing /connection for the SSD drive? It didn't look damaged or melted or anything when I took the old one out so not too sure what to do?

Any help would be appreciated

Kind regards
Joseph

You can't make a windows usb on a Mac, at least not with the windows media creator. On a pre mac silicon, it will create a bootcamp version which is impregnated with the Mac drivers, won't work on a PC. If it's on a mac silicon Mac, then I don't know if it creates an Arm compatible install, AFAIK it just doesn't work on M silicon Macs as there is no longer any bootcamp

You'd have to make it with something like Rufus, or use another windows PC.

I could be wrong, these things are known to happen, although I'll never admit to it if asked!

Yeah I've tried a few YouTube videos now and am really struggling to get this to work.

I'm going to just try and convince my IT at work to let me loosen the Usb policy on my machine so I can make it on Tuesday.

I really hate Apple lol

Apple are far more reliable and efficient than Microsoft, any day of the week, it's simply a different process, but it's very easy to do.

I could never, reliably, format a bootable Windows USB (from an ISO) on a Mac using the built in tools, so I use 'NTFS for Mac'.

Don't know if the Mac's built-in tools have got better, but I've not bothered trying, and this lets me use any format I want - and especially useful for those disks that I need/want as NTFS and to be readable/writable at full speed on both MacOS and Windows.

I know the underlying system can do it, as Apple can successfully make a bootable USB for Bootcamp (when I last used that on an Intel iMac), so there's something in Disk Utility that stops it from getting the format/partition correct, as nothing I've tried on the Mac (for quickness) has ever worked...mostly BMW firmware and my annual sat-nav subscription map updates to USB.

But the easiest way for me was to ensure that I format everything via Windows...and it's worked first time, every time.

Hi guys,

I managed to get the USB working finally using this video >
However I still have a bit of an issue. The new SSD I bought is not showing on the bios, only the 2TB one is showing (that I use for Data storage not for the windows OS)

I dont want to install it there accidentally and lose all of my files.

Does anyone know a way I can get it to recognize the new SSD I put in? is there something that needs to be enable or disabled for it to show in the bios?

UPDATE
I've noticed that is it actually seeing the SSD drive I put in, but it's coming under this "offboard NVMe Controller Configuration" option on the Bios, instead of showing with the rest of the SATA ports.
Any ideas if I have installed it wrong or if I should still be able to find it from the windows install screen without installing on my 2TB other SSD?

regards,
Joseph

Hi guys,
just wanted to come back and say thank you, I got everything working in the end on Monday. It was a nightmare trying to get that USB created from my wifes 2014 Macbook pro lol.

I had to update the software from Mojave to Big Sur to get the Homebrew to play ball. but I'm now back in business and havent lost any major files :)

Thanks again everyone
