Advice on new PC

I'm planning on upgrading my PC (bought it about 6 years ago) as its starting to feel it's age. I'm not overly familiar with what is currently good/not as I haven't had a look in a few years. I've come up with the below as a starting point, based on some other forum posts recently, but any advice would be appreciated. I'm looking to get a new monitor as well, thinking of the AOC Q27G4X as an affordable 1440p monitor. My budget is about £2500 including a new monitor, so I'm a little under that at the moment.

The game that I play the most is Destiny 2. My current PC manages it at 60fps on high, so I'm assuming this new one will be able to up that a bit! I'm looking for a PC that will last for around 5 years that can play new releases with decent performance.

Thank you!

So what's the spec of the old pc and where's it under performing, maybe just needs a couple of upgrades

Here's what I got last time. Not sure exactly what is under performing, but am getting regular frame drops at medium settings for a few games:

With that system I would look to upgrade the GPU, PSU, cooling & the storage options. If you're gaming off of the 1TB mechanical drive I'm not surprised it feels sluggish. The CPU will be running massively hampered with the poor cooling selection, it'll be thermal throttling and driving the frame rate right down.

Unfortunately you selected a very low end PSU at the initial time of order so you would have to replace that as well. We always recommend an appropriate future use PSU to allow for upgrades down the line. I'm actually surprised you've not had any issues running the 9700 and the 2070 on that PSU, I would expect some BSODs or CTDs. Just thinking though, the thermal throttling may have eased that symptom.

Thanks, that's really helpful! I'll take a look at some other options and look at upgrading. Appreciate the help/advice.
If you have a read around and then post back here with your thoughts, you'll get good advice on the upgrades, as we know the base to work off

I had a bit of a look around and would prefer to start over so I have a better base to work off of. I've re-specced based on reading through a some forum posts. Still looking for 1440p gaming (monitor is one posted above, 1400p 144hz). I'm looking to future proof a bit , so that I can have a go at doing smaller updates later. Maybe with the capability to upgrade to 4k in a few years. Budget still £2500, so if there are any areas to improve on I've got a bit of room.

I didn't check before buying last time (as you can probably tell!), so any advice on this build would be really appreciated.

Looks about there to me.

Only comments would be to remove Norton (so you don't have to bother when it arrives), and to up the warranty to Silver for £5.

If you do want to trim the budget a little (about £100), and don't need the extras of the X670 chipset, you could go to the TUF B650 motherboard.

On top of @TonyCarter comment for an extra £39 you should be able to get the icue link H150i in that case, should you get a hotter chip down the line

Thank you for the advice

I don't know a lot about motherboards so had a quick question if that's okay - what are the main differences between the X670 and the TUF B650? Would I be loosing a lot by changing?

I was also looking at the case and saw it comes with 1 front and 1 rear fan. Is it worth getting any extra fans (was eyeing up the '3 x Corsair ICUE LINK QX120 RGB PWM Fan + Controller Kit' for £73)? I thought that might be overkill though.

I upgraded the cooler as well, thanks!

The main gains the X670 has over the B650 are:
  • 1 extra front USB header
  • 2 extra red USB headers
  • wifi 6E vs wifi 6
  • PCIe 5 vs PCIe 4
  • X670 has 1 x PCIe 5x16 + 2 x PCIe 4x16
  • B650 has 3 x PCIe 4x16 and 2 PCIe 4 x 1 slots for simple add-in cards
  • 1 extra m.2 slot (4 vs 3)
More details below:

Thank you - going with the cheaper motherboard!

I was trying to order today and the spec that I had working fine yesterday now wont go through, I get the below message. I went with the TUF Gaming B650 and the Corsair 1200W RMx shift series. A bit confused by this as it was fine yesterday, and I have picked one of the RMx series PSUs! It works fine if I lower it to the 1000W one. Any ideas, or is it a bug with the configuration?

It's a bug. The only thing with the Shift that would prevent it being used is if it fits in the case, power cable wise, there's literally no difference to any other PSU.
