Gentlemen, tell me what mistakes I am making / what tricks I am missing.

This is for game development and high-end rendering, so I need everything. Max SSD for a big project. Max GPU for rendering. Max CPU for compiling. Max RAM because I have several apps open at once sometimes.

I tried to add network cards and other things but was told the motherboard had no space for them. Then I also couldn't upgrade the motherboard.

Budget is not an issue so is there a better configuration possible on the site that is more powerful?

I'm not sure Intel CPUs are well-regarded on here (or in general) and most of us would suggest an AMD Threadripper / Threadripper Pro for heavy-duty commercial work.

Plus the 64-core 7985WX AMD CPU is about 80% more powerful than the 56-core W9-3495X Intel (the equivalent in performance in Blender would be the 32-core 7975WX)...

Here's the AMD equivalent, but I'm not sure whether you need to spend that extra £400-500 on the extra ethernet card as the motherboard has 2x10gb ports built in.

FYI, the 32-core 7975WX would save you abut £2800 for similar performance to the Intel W9-3495X.

As you’ve seen, the biggest change would be the higher tier CPU.

More SSDs are great, but I’d still keep the primary one smaller and only for Windows & apps…and not use of for any storage or working locations (just so nothing gets lots of the system drive get corrupt).

Of course, you could always expand storage via NAS, and have hundreds of TB of SSD storage externally.

If you need premium sound output for some reason, then an external DAC would be the better option...but that would only really be if you're doing music production.

Depending on the workload and the application, a second GPU may not work or be supported...and then you'f have to go to a workstation card if you needed more cores/VRAM...but I've no experience of them as it's usually a niche field for people doing AI stuff where everything is handled in GPU VRAM.

Thanks Tony. I think I'll stick to the one GFX card.

I don't need sound design, so I'll use the slot for a WIFI card (good Wifi would be handy as a backup for the ethernet).

RE GFX card there are 4 options for this card, do you have a view on which is best?

I'ma go for this -- let me know if you see any upgrade potential!

The only real difference is the Asus has better power balancing than the others to help alleviate the rare cable/plug melting issue.
